The city council has proposed 22 parks be removed between Harewood Rd and Grassmere St including all parking outside The China Kitchen and Super Liquor. China Kitchen owner Stella Li said she expects profits would drop by 50 per cent. “It will destroy our small business…it’s very shocking, the city council should be helping small businesses,” she said. On the north side of the road 16 spaces would be lost and heading towards the city, six. “Some car parks will need to be removed in order to accommodate the bus lanes and bus stops but there is available parking behind the businesses on Main North Rd for customers to use,’’ city council manager planning, transport and delivery Lynette Ellis said. She said the city council would improve signage directing customers to off-street parking. There are three car parks behind the China Kitchen, which are not for public use. •Turn to page 7

The city council is proposing to get rid of 22 car parks between Harewood Rd and Grassmere St. Proposing generally means that’s what will happen. And no surprises the affected businesses aren’t happy. The car parks will be taken away to make way for bus lanes, and that is the dilemma. Christchurch is an ever expanding city and with that comes more traffic. We do need to be encouraging public transport, cycling and other ways getting from A to B. There is no simple answer. Pothole police pound pavement By Julia Evans THE NORTH-WEST has its own pothole patroller. Papanui-Innes Community Board member John Stringer has been conducting a personal hunt for any potholes as he traverses the ward. “Following a historically high September rainfall and aggravated by a lot of heavy transport in north-west Christchurch, John there has been a Stringer proliferation of deep potholes emerging in Papanui, some several inches deep at busy intersections,” he said. Mr Stringer said they are dangerous for cyclists and he’s spotted several near the new Papanui Parallel cycleway. “Many of the worst potholes are occurring next to the newly completed cycleways where traffic has been narrowed and the extra tyre stress has aggravated the road surfaces,” he said. Mr Stringer also said he noticed surface flooding caused by shingle coming out of several of the potholes.

HEAD-ON COLLISION RISK To reduce the risk of a head-on crash, no-stopping restrictions will be put in place on Waimairi Rd, Burnside. When vehicles park on the south side of the road, it forces passing vehicles to cross the centre line, which could cause a head-on crash. The FendaltonWaimairi-Harewood Community Board approved the no-stopping restrictions outside 303 and 305 Waimairi Rd at its meeting last week. DANGEROUS TREE GONE A dangerous tree in St Albans has now become firewood. The semimature ash tree was outside 90 Bishop St. It was removed by the city council due to “concerns for public safety”. A city council staff report said investigations into the health and structural integrity of the tree concluded it needed to be removed. It was bent over and protruded onto the street. CYCLEWAY HOLD UP Work on the Northern Line cycleway between Harewood Rd and Restell St has been temporarily stopped. The work on Restell St has been completed but the city council has to wait for traffic signals and a pedestrian crossing to be approved by KiwiRail before it can continue work on Harewood Rd.

The obstacles included tunnels, ramps and jumpers. Jess said it was the best results she and her dogs had achieved. The 17-year-old has been working with dogs for as long she could remember, first starting out running her parent’s dogs around courses before she properly learnt to train dogs when she was about eight. She has been based Selwyn Dog Training Club for two years and has trained eight dogs so far. She said the training takes a lot of patience and it all comes down to working out what motivates a dog. Jess said her two dogs’ personalities are the complete opposites. Swag is sweet, cuddly and more trustworthy on the obstacle course where as Rapid is fast, crazy and more unpredictable.

“I have to get my mum voice out,” she said. She has found the most difficult trick to teach her dogs were weaving poles. As well as taking on national competitions, Jess spends her time helping train beginner classes. “Without us there would be no sport really because we have got to get the younger generation in on it because that will be who is in sport in a couple of years time,” she said. As for the rest of the year, Jess will compete in two more upcoming in Hawkes Bay and Christchurch where she will judge for the first time.

News Council initiates uni parking review By Julia Evans PARKING restrictions around Canterbury University are set to tighten. On-street parking through Fendalton and Ilam is being audited by the city council. The 1996 city council introduced a comprehensive parking plan named The University Parking Plan, but staff said the demand for parks has increased beyond that. In response the city council has initiated a review and is seeking community feedback. The first leg of the audit would see tighter restrictions on the Fendalton and Ilam streets, Hamilton Ave, Lothian St, Ilam Rd, Tuirau Pl, Swanleigh Pl, Ryeland Ave and Braithwaite St. These areas are are currently P120 between 9am and 5pm from March to November – the city council is proposing this be changed to P120 between 9am and 5pm year round. Residents have expressed concerns about the number of vehicles parking on their streets. The public can give feedback on the proposal through the city council’s website.
Police patrols increase near school By Julia Evans AN INCREASED police presence is putting the brakes on speeding motorists near St Albans School. Acting Sergeant James McClurg said police had added the area to their patrol round. He said recent changes to lengthen the red light phase at Cranford and Berwick Sts, as well as Westminster and Cranford Sts, had also “made a Ali Jones difference” to the safety of children. The patrols are part of solutions to ongoing problems of pupils safety on the roads. They were set out during a meeting between St Albans School, the city council and police in a bid to stop the dangerous driving, speed and traffic issues putting the safety of pupils in jeopardy, PapanuiInnes Community Board chairwoman Ali Jones said. The “quick wins” included the increased police presence, which deputy principal Claire Howison said is making a difference. Other plans included more

monitoring of the 3min dropoff spot on Westminster St, installation of more 3min dropoff zones and yellow lines on Sheppard Pl. Ms Howison said the school didn’t quite have the “man-power” to increase the monitoring yet, although the police presence had been “wonderful”. However, Ms Jones said it was not only about “band-aid” fixes – the meeting was also about looking at long-term solutions.
“We don’t want to be fire fighting on a daily basis, we want to take a more holistic approach and deal with the future as well,” she said. City council traffic engineer Penny Grey is planning an audit for the area’s roads. It will start shortly to help deal with the predicted increase in traffic from the Northern Arterial. City council staff are also investigating the possibility of creating another entry to
the school through English Park to decrease congestion on Westminster St. Board of trustees chairman Chris Wallace said the school is “really pleased” with the outcome. “It was great to hear all the stakeholders ultimately have the safety of our kids at the centre of decision-making,” he said. There will be another meeting between the community board, the city council, the school and police in November.

Super Liquor owner Carolyn Moffat said while her business has some spaces out back, there are not enough. “It’s a glib statement saying they’ll put in more signage,” Ms Moffat said. She said the city council hasn’t understood “strip shopping.” “People pull in if they can get a park, if not they keep going,” Ms Moffat said. Mrs Li said people driving home would phone in for takeaway and quickly pull into a park on the street, grab their food and a bottle of wine before carrying on. “They won’t stop if there are no parks because it’s easy to keep going for another block and go to a different restaurant,” she said. But Ms Moffat isn’t entirely unhappy with the proposal, she is glad to see something being done about the traffic. “I just think they need to look at it again. The bus lane shouldn’t be full time. There’s

Bid to ease congestion outside school gets approval By Julia Evans A BID to ease congestion on a narrow street outside Selwyn House School has been approved. The city council is set to put 3min parking restrictions in place on Merivale Lane after receiving approval from the FendaltonWaimairi-Harewood Community Board. The move comes after the school approached city council staff with a request for an on-site visit to look at solutions for the pick-up and drop-off congestion. “The reason this request has been initiated is that the school requires a safe area for parents and caregivers to park and pickup and drop-off children,” a city council staff report said. The 3min parking area outside the school is currently P120 between 8am and 4pm on school days. It will change to P120 between 9am and 3pm on school days and P3 from 8am to 9am and 3pm to 4pm. The project will cost $1200 and be completed four weeks after the city council selects a contractor.

St Andrew’s dominate Zonta awards By Andrew King ST ANDREW’S College athletes cleaned up at the Zonta Sports Awards last week. Previous winner and former world under-23 cross-country mountain bike champion Anton Cooper spoke at the awards which were initially created to recognise the high achievements of young sportswomen in Canterbury, but later became a combined women’s and men’s event. St Andrew’s had winners in five of the six award categories. Lawrence Arundell took out the boys award for his involvement in the school’s trap shooting team. Christina Shepherd won the award for outstanding achievement by a female athlete with a disability for her efforts in athletics this year. Rower Ben Taylor won the award for outstanding achievement by a sportsman in one sport. Taylor, who lives in West Melton, and teammate Thomas Russel, brought home a silver medal at the Junior World Rowing Championships in Bulgaria with the New Zealand junior men’s coxless quad. Both were selected after a strong showing at the Maadi Cup regatta earlier in the year.

He received it for his involvement with the school’s touch team. •Marian College netballer Renee Rae won the girls award in the same category as Hutchinson. •Middleton Grange’s Will Stedman won the award for most outstanding achievement by a young sportsman with a disability. Stedman took silver in the T36 category at the World Para Athletics Championships in London this year. •Rangi Ruru Girls’ School netballer Kate Boyd won the girls award for the most valued contribution to a team for coaching and playing. Rangi’s Brittany Wang took out best all-round sportswoman in more than one sporting code. Wang competed in trampoline, hockey and athletics for the school. St Andrew’s rowing eight shared the most outstanding team of young sportsmen award with Christ’s College’s first XI hockey team. St Andrew’s won the Maadi Cup by 0.98sec over Christ’s College in April to claim their maiden title. Finally, the St Andrew’s senior mixed tennis team took out the outstanding mixed team award. Other winners included: •Christchurch Girls’ High
rowing pair Grace Loveridge and Laura Pinnell won the award for most outstanding team of sportswomen. The duo brought home gold at the Maadi Cup regatta and have not been beaten this season. Loveridge was also selected in the national team for the Junior World Rowing Championships. •Burnside High golfer Amelia Garvey was named most outstanding sportswoman in one sport.

By Andrew King PROMISING GOLFER Amelia Garvey won the Principal’s Cup for outstanding achievement at the Burnside High School sports awards. The talented 17-year-old golfer collected one of six awards handed out at the Aurora Centre. Amelia won the Canterbury secondary schools’ stroke play title, and finished second at the nationals with the school’s mixed golf team. She qualified for the LGPA New Zealand Women’s Open earlier this month and made the cut to play the full four rounds. In March, she won the New Zealand women’s amateur stroke play championship recording a winning score of 15 under par which saw her finish six shots clear. She also won the South Island women’s stroke play championships in February. Amelia was recently named New Zealand Eagles Golfing Society golfer of the year. Other winners of the title over the years includes Stuart Jones, Bob Charles, Danny Lee, Tim Wilkinson and Lydia Ko. She is also a member of the Canterbury women’s golf team. Five other Burnside High School sports awards were handed out on the night: •Tsubasa Nisbet, 17, won sportswoman of the year after a standout year with both the Burnside basketball and volleyball teams. As well as playing in the senior volleyball team, she coached a junior girls team this year. She has also been the girls basketball most valuable player for the last four years and is the senior captain. She was a member of the Canterbury Wildcats, Canterbury under-19s and the New Zealand under-18 women’s team

Success with gadgets and gizmos THREE BURNSIDE High School students have made the finals of a national inventing competition. Felix Backhouse developed a system that uses drones and hyper spectral imaging to monitor bird populations. He said the idea came when he realised the Department of Conservation and Forest and Bird currently use groups of people to do bird counts and monitor populations. “Given the quick-moving nature of birds, the fact many are camouflaged and the likelihood of human error, this system can be quite imprecise. My project is aimed at improving the process and making it more reliable,” Felix said. Vincent Lee’s gadget is an “all-in-one” device that tells you information on the weather, buses, prices for holidays, the status of different appliances and is an alarm. “There is a lot of stuff on the internet that enables you to access this information, but it takes time to access. So I decided to design a device that makes these tasks more convenient to access, and means things can get done faster.” Jack Breurkes invented a physics game for mobile devices intended to be used as a study resource for students taking NCEA level 2 physics. “I wanted to make a game this year for my programming class project and I thought a game
would be an interesting thing to do . . . I looked at potential areas, like educational games which are close to home as we use them at school. I’m quite confident in physics, so thought I could make a game out of it with my knowledge and help people out while doing it,” Jack said. It comes as last week Nor’West News reported Papanui High School student Michael Hann was named as a finalist for his security system activated by natural disasters. The students travel to Auckland on November 7 to attend the Bright Sparks evening where a winner will be announced.

Turn on the grill/fan function in the oven. Slice the ciabatta in generous diagonal slices. Grill in the oven, turning once, until the bread is toasted. Remove from the oven and keep warm.
